Marvels of the region:

There are many magnificent places to visit on the island of beauty. Among these places, the following are a must-see:

The Scandola Reserve:

  • A natural reserve, named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. You will see thousands of protected animal species, stunning and diversified vegetation… a totally protected natural place, which can only be visited by boat.

Agriates Desert (Désert des Agriates):

  • A desert in Corsica??? Of course!… The Agriates Desert is the only desert in Europe, today.  Here a sandy point, but also a scrubland in which there is diversified vegetation.

Villages to visit:

Lumio:

  • Magic of light and expression in stone: At 200 m above sea level, the village in which houses, nestled around the church, create magical lighting and exude the fragance of wine.  Places to visit: Romanesque Church of SS Peter and Paul, Churches of St Mary and of St Anthony, the abandoned village of Occi, which was deserted because of difficulties in water supply, the Genoese Tower of Caldano

Aregno:

  • The village and its hamlets are located on the hillside. Fruit orchard cultivation has been one of the riches of the commune: in addition to olive trees, there are also citrus fruit and almond trees. Aregno oranges, the best of Corsica, are exported to the Continent. They are used to adorn the statue of St Anthony the Abbot on 17 January. Places to visit and see: the Romanesque churches:  the polychrome ‘Pieve’ [mother or main church of the region] Church of La Trinité (Holy Trinity) (12th Century), decorated with 15th Century frescos. Located in the village cemetery, it is one of the most famous sites in Corsica. It has been the object of complete restoration work. There arealso the Church of San Quilico (11th Century) below the village, the Baroque Church of St Anthony the Abbot on the main square (panels donated from the Rosary and St Francis Xaxier churches, priest pulpit, the organ); the buildings, around the square, are characteristic of 19th Century mansions.  A walk on the paths around the village allows you to observe the many aspects of rural buildings.  An event not to be missed: the Almond fair which occurs in August every year.

St Antonino

  • The most beautiful example of mediaeval architecture in Corsica. Built in the 9th Century, this is one of the oldest villages in Corsica. Located at 500 m above sea level and thanks to its location in an eagle’s eyrie, it has a 360° view and command of all of Balagne. Its mediaeval architecture and its alleys paved with the oldest stones make it one of the most beautiful villages in France.  Places to visit: The Parish Church of the Annunciation, built in the Baroque style of the 17th Century with its organ, the Chapel of Notre-Dame-des-Bergers (Our Lady of the Shepherds), the ancient bread oven, the Square of the Lavasina Chapel, and the ruins of the Old Castellu Fort.
